Subject fundamentals
The Architectural Technology Courses held in DPA 3rd year – Principles of Environmental Technological Design, Environmental Technological Design, and Eco-building within the Architectural Design Studio – aim at supplying basic knowledge, methods and tools for designing a building in which functional needs, regulation constraints, environmental context conditions, and construction techniques and materials be integrated.

Within the two lecture courses, theoretical aspects will be dealt with supplying basic concepts and simplified methods for context analyses as well as preliminary and schematic building design.
Within the Architectural Design Studio, Eco-building contribution will allow for applying the above mentioned concepts and methods to a practical design experience.
Expected learning outcomes
- Acquisition of an environmental approach to building design through a basic knowledge of:
• building context and relevant energy and material resources;
• functions of building’s elements and subsystems;
• technological characteristics of materials;
• principles of the interaction between a building and its context in order to optimise the design process from an environmental point of view.

- Acquisition of skills in using basic methods and tools for an eco-compatible building design.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
- Knowledge of the performance-based theory for building analyses.
- Ability to analyse the built environment according to a technological classification system.
- Ability to understand and represent building’s components and relevant functional characteristics.

Moreover, for the Eco-building contribution in the Architectural Design Studio, knowledge of graphical representation rules at various scales is essential.
Contents
Ecobuilding Atelier is configured as teaching experience of the final year of Architecture Bachelor's degree in which the disciplines of Architectural Design and Technology Architecture converge synergistically to provide the student , through the development of a project, the tools to manage the system of relations that binds functional requirements, regulatory constraints, environmental characteristics and climate, performance techniques and materials.
The Atelier includes the design of a building of small volume for neighborhood cultural activities in the urban district in Turin
Delivery modes
The activities are articulated in:
-communications and lectures 20%

-checks collective 10%
-exercises 50%
and will be directed to the development of a design and will address the aspects of building , on environmental compatibility, on reduction of energy consumption, and the pursuit of high levels of comfort.

Further references will be notified by the teacher during the semester , you will also receive all documentation relating to the project chosen by the teaching staff , as well as notes and references to communications carried out in the classroom.
Assessment and grading criteria
The final examination conducted orally and individually and summarizes in the judgment of the professors the outcome of several tests . The final evaluation will result from the judgment concerning the individual contributions of Architectural Design and Building Technology in accordance with the procedures laid down by each professor as well as presentation skills.
Both contributions are mandatory to pass the Atelier
