Subject fundamentals
The course is mainly an applicative course aiming to introduce students to software environment for discrete event simulation (usually graphical tools for the description of system dynamics and system performance evaluation) and to tools for the evaluation of financial flows (investments) based on Montecarlo simulation. Besides practical issues, related to the use of software tools, the theoretical basics of the simulation will be also discussed.
Expected learning outcomes
Students must be able to develop a simulation model of a real system, to gather the data needed for numerical experiments and to critically analyze the numerical results. These abilities strictly require a deep understanding of all the issues discussed in the course both the practical ones (related to the use of software environment) and the theoretical ones (related to the theoretical basis of simulation).
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Students must have a knowledge of statistics and probability (even though they will be shortly addressed at the beginning of the course), English language and basics of computer programming. Ability to logically represent problems and deep concreteness and interest in practical problems are also required.
Contents
Role of simulation in designing and re-engineering of complex systems. Basics of discrete event simulation. Input modelling, random number generation and random variate generation. Representation of business processes; entity flow and synchronization; introductory examples Supply chain modelling. Transportation system mdelling. Model verification and validation. Output analysis. Basics of Montecarlo simulation. Use of Montecarlo simulation for financial flow analysis in alternative scenarios.
Delivery modes
The course is composed by theory classes and practical classes (in computer laboratory).

The required books and readings wilI be assigned during the first lesson of the course.
Assessment and grading criteria
The assessment type and related grading criteria strictly depend on the number of students and hence they will announced during the first lesson of the course.
