Subject fundamentals

The course aims to form a designer aware of the consequences of projects, at different scales and in different local contexts, for the sustainable management of environmental, economic, social and cultural resources. At the heart of the project is set then the "sustainable" development, in which urban systems have a strategic role. The urban project is characterized as a complex project: the goals are environmental sustainability, social cohesion, economic feasibility, equity distribution, morphological quality. The project will focus then on problems related to urban complexes, in term of land uses and of landscape and environmental resources.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will acquire multiple and specialized concerning:
- The concept of sustainability, in its various meanings and disciplinary evolution;
- The territorial analysis and representation techniques;
- The understanding of the system of signs, meanings and uses that characterize the landscape;
- Knowledge of the social and environmental needs;
- The morphological structure of places, characters and spatial organization of settlements;
- The social and cultural characteristics of local communities, their relationships with natural and built environment;
- The design process at different scales, from the functional and formal point of view and in its relations with the socio-economic and environmental development.
This knowledge is acquired through a system of mono-disciplinary lectures, a joint project on urban case study, seminarial discussions. Students to pass the exam must acquire ability:
- To analyze the quality of the environment and open urbanized spaces, in order to choose strategies and operational tools appropriate to share the proposal;
- To collect, to organize and to interpret data for the territorial and social knowledge and to be able to operate with other professionals;
- To understand and be able to use the planning parameters required for an urban transformation;
- To predict social and environmental impacts and to evaluate the proposed transformations;
- To effectively represent the project.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The skills and knowledge that the student must have acquired in previous courses will concern: technical elements of urban design, architectural history concepts in order to recognize styles and construction periods, the capacity to assess costs and real estate prices and to understand economic-financial choices, social and economic geography to understand the different settlement areas, system of local distribution of powers, urban sociology and techniques of participation.
Contents
The Workshop aims to provide conceptual and operational capacity in many different disciplines for urban design. The project focuses on the transformation of urban areas and move from the analysis of existing tools and to verify environmental, social, and economic effects. The Workshop will consist in ex-cathedra lectures (about 40% of the scheduled time), operational activities, seminars and revisions of design progresses (60% of the scheduled time).
The environment and territorial sociology aims to provide an understanding of the social dimension of sustainability, with reference to the urban design; it leads to perform a set of activities to interpret the theorical- methodological and practical skills in relation to built environment perception, urban life quality and social equity, citizen participation in decision-making.
Delivery modes
The teaching methods include single and multi-disciplinary lectures, with the participation of external invited speakers (technical, public administrators, experts in specific fields, etc.). Visits and guided tours that will help to interpret the project context mainly in the classroom (and, if applicable, in computer labs). We will also verify periodically the design progresses.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Bibliographical references will be specified during the course by the lecturers and in relation to the specific design needs of the Atelier. In any case, the base material will be available to students for lessons and exercises, through the teaching portal.
Assessment and grading criteria
The frequency of the Atelier is a condition to develop positively the work.
The knowledge will be verified through the discussion during lesson and a written test. It will will focus on the theoretical aspects and applications of the various disciplines involved in the Atelier. It may be required monographic issues or the reports on technical topics . The student will make the examination tests individually or within the groups. The final evaluation will take into account ongoing evaluations, presentations and discussions of final group works, but also taking in consideration individual participation in such works. Only students that overcome sufficient judgment in both Atelier disciplines can take part of the exam.
