Subject fundamentals
The course, semi-compulsory for the Master of Science in Management Engineering, provides the basic skills required to manage supply chains in both manufacturing and service industries.
The course objectives are as follows:
• present the fundamental techniques to effectively manage supply chains,
• understand the operational linkages between companies and economic implications,
• select the appropriate organizational models for relationships between companies,
• learn about the most used contracting arrangement for supply chains,
• adapt and apply the theoretical supply chain frameworks to various industries, through practical seminars and hands-on case studies
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired knowledge in the following fields:
• supply chain planning, monitoring, and control methods,
• ability to use quantitative techniques for supply chains,
• operational and economic assessment of a logistics network,
• contracting modes applicable to diverse supply chain types,
• definition of company and inter-company operational flows
• capability to work as part of a team member to produce an educational-purposed practical project
Concerning the future application in the professional life of the acquired knowledge, at the end of the course, the student will have taken the methodological skills for analysis and design of supply chains.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The knowledge of basic concepts on logistics, industrial operations, and statistics.
Contents
Introduction to supply chain management (SCM). Organization models and main flows 4h
Link between SC and transportation 2 h
Customer service concepts. Evaluations and measurement of logistic performance 6 h
Product traceability on the SC; actual and future technologies 4h
Inventory management: push- pull concepts 4 h
Application of the SCM : material flow management, JIT, kanban 4h
Procurement management 2h
Logistic contract and risk sharing 4 h
Industrial warehouses: their functions, types, applications, case histories, indexes and design criteria 4h
Picking systems for industrial warehouses 6h
Logistic costs. Analysis of economic evaluations in the SC. Activity Based Costing applied to logistics 4h
Lean logistics 3h

Case studies presentation and discussion 15-16 h
Delivery modes
Lectures and a long term project will be developed in small groups. The work is aimed at preparing an auditing of a real SC choosen by the student, using a framework written by the tutor. This requires the context and main flow description, a critical analysis, the KPI identification, and some technical and organization suggestions.

Course materials, case studies and additional readings will be posted on line at the course website.

Assessment and grading criteria
Final grading comprises both long-term project evaluation, a final written text, and an optional oral exam.
Small groups will be graded based on a class comparison. Student grading might differentiate based on individual participation to the team project.
The written text is composed of both exercise and problem sets.
