The Atelier focuses its work on the elaboration, in an urban context, of an architectural, environmental and social recovery project, supported by disciplinary monographic lessons.
Even though it looks at the texture of the surrounding fabric, the intervention scale is architectural and addresses issues related to the design of transformation / refunctionalization operations, in which, for the insertion of new parts, an increase of quality and development of the heritage and of the urban context is intended. In this regard, according to the principle of minimal intervention on the existing and saving of urbanized soil, the necessary regulatory adjustment operations and the components of innovation (technological and material), compatible with the object being studied, are evaluated. The topics related to process innovations, methods and techniques, as well as tools for organizing, managing and maintaining complex building integration processes, will be discussed.

The Atelier is organized in frontal lessons, operating moments (such as visits to areas of intervention), meetings with people working in the area. The period dedicated to the Atelier is divided into three main phases: a first phase of about 5 weeks, addressing the urban recovery aspects of the consolidated city (on the microurban scale - that of the neighborhood), the contextual knowledge of case studies to highlight the existing problems (physical, social, economic degradation) and the components of value (perceptive, cultural, functional, environmental); also it expects initial design intuitions. The first phase ends with a group presentation and discussion of the projects produced by each student (subject of evaluation for the final evaluation).
A second phase (5 weeks) is dedicated to the identification of user / promoter subjects and of the compatibility of new destinations for the use of the architectural manufacts. Also for the second phase there is a final presentation evaluated by the professors.
The third phase is entirely devoted to the completion of the architectural and technological project.
The theme of the Atelier refers to the study of some examples of 20th century architectures - particularly in recent years - of complex operations of restructuring and redestination (managed by private and / or public operators) that most often compromised the integrity of the architecture work by altering its expressive form, language and perception.
The possibility of planning the recovery and enhancement of the built heritage of the 20th century by delineating a new operational and procedural program of redestination also through specific critical instruments (from redesigning distribution to cutting-edge techniques, new materials, etc.), would allow to transform the potentials of a building that is acknowledged, but currently passive, into a major cultural and economic resource.
The project will focus on the development and upgrading the architectural and constructive qualities of some case studies of the 20th century in Piemonte, such as the building of the former Borsa Valori in Turin, designed and built by Roberto Gabetti, Aimaro Isola, Giorgio and Giuseppe Raineri in 1952-56 and currently waiting for transformation.
Delivery modes
In conclusion to what is already stated in the program the final project will be drawn up in groups of 2 students, in which each participant will have to be in charge of the whole process.
Within the atelier activities, there will be group moments of exercise and discussion on specific topics also in preparation for the final exam.

It should also be noted that the professors will use the didactic portal to deliver the students the graphic materials and documentation necessary for the project.

Assessment and grading criteria
The evaluation consists of two parts, the judgments given during the course of the Atelier and the final exam. The attendance at lectures, seminars and other lab activities is considered necessary to be able to develop the activities positively.
The exam is in oral form and consists in the presentation of each student’s project plans elaborated according to the instructions of the professors; during the interview two or three questions will be asked about the contents of the course (lessons, bibliography, tutorials), especially on the design strategies adopted.
Take part in the judgment:
- the choices made within the project (insertion into the existing building, architectural composition, materials used, strategies for implementation and management);
- the ability to organize and process the quality of the materials used (communication and precision of information on the architectural scale and detail);
- the project's presentation consisting in theoretical and applied contents;
- capacity of the critical analysis of the design process.

The design of the project will be individual or in groups of two (where the individual contributions are clearly recognizable).

For the final exam each student is required to prepare, in addition to the project plans:
- a "Lab Booklet" (to be presented at the exam) containing: notes relating to lectures and seminars; Anthologies and extracts from the bibliography of the course; assemblies, study sketches and individual reasoning on the architecture project;
- a background and construction analysis of the socio-economic, historical-cultural, physico-spatial factors that characterize the area of intervention; of the constructive and degradation aspects of the case study; of the choices of materials and technologies for intervention.
