Subject fundamentals
This course aims to provide an overview on fibers applied in engineering, describes their properties and application. Applications include textiles, structural composites for mechanics and aerospace, non conventional fields (such as biomedical devices and flexible electronics). The course first provides basic ideas on the preparation, the structures and the properties of polymers from which fibers are obtained, then describes a selection of characterization techniques, finally discusses the main processing technologies (from spinning methods to obtain fibers to finishing processes).
Expected learning outcomes
By completing this course the student will know the composition and the structure of fibers, their relationship with properties, the main applications and processing methods. By examining the literature and by doing practicals, students will acquire abilities in data acquisition, their critical discussion, communication and problem solving skills.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basics of chemistry and material science.
Contents
Fibers, microfibers, nanofibers: geometrical characteristics, structures, physico-chemical properties.
Basics on 1) synthesis and structure of polymers for fibers 2) polymer morphologies and properties 3) some techniques for the physico-chemical characterization of fibers (mainly fibers for textile)
Fibres:
• Natural fibers (animal fibers i.e. wool, silk; cellulosic fibers i.e. Cotton, hemp, linen): chemical structures, morphologies, properties, processes from biomass
• Man-made fibers (nylon, polyesters, acrylics, polyolefins, elastomers): chemical structures, morphologies, properties, industrial synthetic processes
• Special fibers (aramids, carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes): chemical structures, properties, syntheses
Applications for: textiles, innovative textiles (geotextile, medical textile, textile for automotive), composites, smart materials (adaptive and responsive fibers, flexible electronics)
Spinning processes: wet spinning, dry spinning, melt spinning, and gel spinning, electrospinning
Finishing processes: surface modification of fibers, sizing. Basics on dying processes.
Delivery modes
Weekly lectures and seminars.
Lab experiments: Physico-chemical and mechanical characterisation of –textiles. Dying of textiles and plasma surface treatment of textiles.

Assessment and grading criteria
Written test on a selection of topics. Practicals will also be evaluated.
For students who are especially interested in a topic: scientific papers and/or patent will be assigned and will be discussed in the form of an oral presentation.
