Subject fundamentals
The course aims to provide students with examples of applied engineering in cutting-edge areas of regenerative medicine. The course includes an engineering description of the cells structure and their functionality; the main tissues are taken into account as well. The remodeling of biological tissues are addressed together with the main technologies involved in this sector which is a fast growing research and innovation area.
Expected learning outcomes
Students at the end of the course must possess skills and abilities that enable them to interface with biologists and physicians in particular in the fields of regenerative and reparative medicine.
Contents
The course trains students to interpret biological phenomena using engineering methodologies (Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, etc.).
Multilevel hierarchical systems with particular reference to biological systems.
Multiphysics an multilevel modeling techniques.
Structures and substructures of cells (DNA, RNA, proteins, ...), cell replication, stem cells. Ontogeny and phylogeny, embryo development.
Main factors related to the growth of tissues and to tissue vascularization.
Interaction cells/tissues; artificial and bioartificial materials.
Cell cultures and bioreactors for tissue engineering, main applications.
Ethical aspects and regulations.
