Subject fundamentals
The course aims to provide students with skills in the field of tissue engineering, a topic of great interest to any engineer. In the course, some principles of cell and tissue biology, biochemistry (proteins, polysaccharides, proteins) and material chemistry (polymeric and composite materials) will be recalled. Cell-substrate and cell-cell interactions will be analyzed. A special attention will be devoted to the "scaffolds", three dimensional matrices for cell culture, the main techniques and the main materials to produce them. Nanotechnologies will also be explored with particular reference to nanomaterials for therapeutic purposes. Additionally, intelligent materials for drug delivery (hydrogels sensitive to various physical stimuli) will be introduced. In the classroom some selected scientific articles will be examined, in order to educate the students to the understanding of the scientific papers.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student should possess skills and abilities that enable him/her to understand the basics of tissue engineering and new regenerative therapies and to understand scientific articles on the subject.

General knowledge on the cell-substrate interaction
General knowledge on nanotechnologies
Knowledge of the main devices for releasing drugs
Understanding of specialized scientific texts (scientific articles)
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
A basic knowledge of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and biology is required. Some concepts will be recalled to allow the understanding to all students, under their request.

Delivery modes
The course is taught in Italian and the slides are in English.
The lessons are taught by four teachers.
The course includes 60 hours of lectures.

Assessment and grading criteria
The exam is written with closed and open questions. The students can decide to withdraw from the examination within 24h after the exam end by an auto-evaluation (the teacher will publish the solutions in the Portal just after the exam). After that time, they cannot withdraw any more.
