Subject fundamentals
The course is intended to provide the students the operative criteria to transfer the design elements to the construction/excavation site, taking into account the laws and rules, the management of involved staff, the materials, the plants and installation aimed to excavation sites, both for civil and mining purposes; the various elements are linked with the operational safety.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will be able to know and organize the site forming elements, on the basis of the design and transferring them into the operative actions. Procedures, machine and materials details and the excavation / mining site organization as well will be part of the student background.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic elements of excavation technicques, applied mechanics, topography and construction.
Contents
Site classification (civil, mining, surface, underground, punctual, linear, special –mountain, reclamation, submerged, demolition, geognostic, maintenance, refurbishment).
The safety factor concept and the characteristic – design values.
Site accessibility and the interference with the external environment. Temporary accessibility warnings.
Site local accessibility: geometry in plan and elevation, transversal section, site roads and ramps.
Lifetime of a work; reclamation. Undesired effects of groundwater table, environment, traffic, subsidence, vibrations. Notes on risk, vulnerability and failure probability during the excavation/construction.
Laws and regulations for public works, tender, design, build, verification.
Mining laws.
Eurocodes.
The technical documents for the design: stages of the design, report, drawings, scheduled works, requirements, prices, works budgeting.
Professional staff and competencies during the project development: stages, claims, controvercies, modifications, testing, approval test, expertise.
The operation safety of the machines.
Management at site: connected phases PERT and linear GANTT
Power supply, material and temporary conditions at the site.
Quarry classification, excavated materials, grade and reserve definition.
Quarry exploitation methods, internal transportation systems.
Quarry stability and reclamation.
Treatment plants: crushing, classification, separation.
Special plants: soil reinforcing with grout, mud transportation, conveyor belts, concrete formworks.
Geosynthetics: use and application in geoengineering and landfilling.
Muck and excation material treatment: classification, transportation, disposal, reuse.
Other site materials: cement and bituminous conglomerates. Main technological aspects, composition, mix design, mixing plants.
Material testing, approval test, measuments and monitoring.
Technical visit.
Delivery modes
During the course some examples will be carried out to fix the theoric concepts. A multidisciplinary workshop will be develop in team, and provided for the exam. In case of availability, a technical visit will be organized.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
The web site of the course will be progressively updated with the presentations of the lessons, fundamental together with the class notes for learning. Due to the multisciplinarity of the course, specific references will be provided during the lessons.
Assessment and grading criteria
Written exam (2 hours), with open questions and quiz; if the score is at least 18, an oral exam with a discussion on the classwork and on the technical visit will be requested.
