Subject fundamentals
The aim of the course is to give the main elements in order to evaluate the environmental compatibility and in order to define the environmental damage using the concept of pollution transportation and accumulation phenomenon that the students have already studied in other courses.
Expected learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to offer the useful competence in order to identify, define and establish the modality of verification, monitoring and control of the effects of particular substances that can produce stress phenomenon on living organisms. In this way, it is possible to understand the ecological and environmental reasons concerning the necessity of the environmental reclamation. From this point, and so from the consequence necessity of intervention, derive the fundamental elements for the choice of the best techniques adoptable.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
In order to understand completely the argument of the course it is necessary to have some notions of environmental chemistry and pollutant dynamic. Anyway during the course it will be do all the elements necessary in order to understand the concepts explained.
The course will be divided into three parts:
• In the first one general concepts will be shown (15 hours) concerning pollutants accumulation and dynamic;
• In the second one will be shown the concept concerning the eco – toxicology (15 hours);
• The third part, that will be a conspicuous part (30 hours), will be exam the modality for the evaluation of the environmental compatibility and the definition of the environmental damage.
More in detail, in the first part of the course will be shown the following arguments: exposure, absorption, accumulation, metabolism and modality of expulsion of the substances potential toxic. The characteristics and the modality of definition of the curve dose / effect / reaction will be presented and the consequence tolerance limits will be discussed. After to have presented the concept of the BAT (Best Available Techniques), the concept of environmental residual concentration will be shown.
In the second part will be briefly shown the fundamental eco – toxicology aspects in order to esteem the environmental damage; will be introduced the concept concerning the toxicology measure (EC50, LOEC, NOEC) and the consequence environmental meaning. We’ll be illustrated the conceptual of the origin and the modality of definition of the bio – indicator, the using of indexes and the adoption of these tools in the environmental field.
Finally, in the third part we’ll proposed a sequential and integrated approach for the evaluation of the environmental compatibility. This approach will consist in the following parts: environmental balance (starting to the concepts of mass and energy balance) / implementation of the pollutant transport, dispersion, modification and return models (in order to define the pollutant path) / evaluation of the assumption and of the effect on the different matrixes / definition of the externalities value modification. In particular for this last point will illustrate in detail the concept of external cost and we will discussed the elements in order to proceed with the evaluation (rigorous procedure with the Externeč methodology, medical – epidemiology evaluation, Willingness-to-Pay, simplify procedure).
On the basis of the above – reported logic path, we’ll introduce the concept of environmental damage understood as the modality of externalities modification definition, consequence of the transfer and accumulation phenomenon.
Some application of the above reported concepts will be shown.
Delivery modes
The course foresees 48 hours of theoretical lections and 12 hours of exercitation. During the exercitation hours we will developed, with applicative numerical example, the theoretical principles treated at lesson. In particular, the aim of the exercitations will be the following: environmental balance and external costs definition.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
There aren’t specific book required.
The didactic materials (slide presented during the lessons, papers, brief reports and so on) will be distributed from the professor during the lessons or loading on the didactic portal.
Assessment and grading criteria
The final exam will consist in a written test that will include theoretical quiz and numerical exercises concerning the subject treated at lesson (time for the exam 2 hours).
