Subject fundamentals
The course is aimed at providing the basic knowledge and the design skills in the field of the thermal behaviour and energy efficiency of buildings. Objects of the lectures are: energy and mass balance of the built environment, energy performances of the building envelope components, tools and methods for the energy analysis of buildings, thermal comfort, IAQ and ventilation systems, HVAC systems
Expected learning outcomes
The skills and knowledge that are expected at the end of the lectures include the ability:
- to assess the requirements for a correct energy design of a building, including thermal comfort and IAQ requirements and the energy efficiency requirements of the various building components and installations,
- to define the heating and cooling loads for a building,
- to optimize the energy performance of buildings and the indoor environmental quality,
- of developing the design for the energy retrofit of buildings,
- of managing at the professional level the energy design of buildings.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic knowledge of mathematics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, basic principle of building physics (BSc level).
The lectures are organized to cover 6 ECTS. They are organized as theoretical lectures, practical lessons (oriented to the design) and experimental exercises. The main topics covered by the course are:
- Mass and energy balance of the built environment,
- Thermal analysis of building envelope components (opaque, transparent and thermal bridges),
- Assessment of the design heating load (accordingly to standard UNI EN 12831),
- Assessment of the design cooling load (accordingly to the simplified method based on a 24 hours stabilized periodic regime),
- Basic concepts on HVAC systems, their classifications and main features,
- Thermal comfort (PMV method and basics of adaptive comfort, standard UNI EN ISO 7730),
- IAQ and ventilation (pollutants classifications, prescriptive and performance base methods, objective and subjective IAQ assessment, standards UNI 10339 and ASHRAE St. 62 e 62.2),
- Technologies for the IAQ control and fundamentals of ventilation,
- Ventilation systems and strategies: technologies and analysis methods,
- Air tightness and air distribution in buildings,
- Basic concepts of IEE – Indoor Environmental Quality (standard UNI EN 15251),
- Basic concepts about Building Energy Simulation.
Delivery modes
Teaching is organised in theoretical lectures, application lectures (design) and in experimental exercises.
The application lectures consist in the development of the energy design of a new or an existing building (in particular, the object of this design exercise will be the same adopted in the frame of the "Laboratorio di progettazione integrale". The design exercise includes: the assessment of the design heating load, the energy optimization of the building envelope, the assessment of the thermal comfort condition and IAQ).
The experimental exercises will be centred on the measurement of the thermal comfort and of the IAQ/ventilation parameters
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Lecture notes, material, slides, technical standards distributed by the teachers.

Assessment and grading criteria

The exam consists of two parts. A written test and an oral test (both compulsory).
The written test is structured in two parts:
• Theory, with open questions that require a synthetic answer (duration 30 min),
• A numerical exercise (duration 1 hour and 30 min).

During the Theory part the student cannot use any support (book, note, lecture notes, slide, technical standards, others). During the numerical exercise the students can/must use: technical standards (the own student copy), book, note, lecture notes, slide.
Each part is worth of 16 points (total 32 = 30 cum laude).
If the total score of the written test is postivie (i.e. equal or above 15/30), the student can access to the oral test.
The oral test consists of a presentation and a critical discussion of the final product of the design exercise, justifying the design choices and results on the basis of the knowledge acquired in the theoretical lectures (some questions and insights on the theory can be asked during this discussion).
The final score is the arithmetic average of the score obtained for the written test and the oral test (in order to pass the exam each part must have a score equal or above 15/30).
The written and oral tests must be done at the same time.
If one fails the oral test, also the written test must be repeated.
The exam booking on internet is mandatory.

The basic and the supplementary teaching materials, the presentation of the course and the examination rules are available on the teaching web portal under the heading "Material of the course".
