Subject fundamentals
At present, in particular, but not only, in the oncologic surgery, the interest in thermal therapies (hyperthermia and cryogenics) is continuously growing. The aim of this course is to allow the students the skills to develop studies, analyses and designing devices for thermal therapies.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will know the physical bases of the devices and related technologies for the use of thermal therapies and the interactions between devices and human body, such that they will be able to begin the designing of instrumentations and devices for thermal therapies in clinical use.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Knowledge of the fundamental topics of general physics, engineering thermodynamics and heat transfer.
Bases of heat and mass transfer in human body. Models for the evaluation of thermal dose. Irreversible disruption in living tissues. Clinical thermometry. Electromagnetic sources of heat. Ultrasound sources of heat. Numerical models for thermal therapies. Instruments and methods for thermal therapies. Devices for medical and clinical treatments. Imaging in thermal therapies. Hyperthermia as therapeutic support in cancer therapies. Laser and nanoparticles in thermal therapies. Thermal ablation.
Delivery modes
The course is organized in a series of lectures and applications, in order to allow the students to become familiar with the physical bases of designing thermal devices.

Assessment and grading criteria
Written exam on simple exercises and oral exam on the topic of the course.
