Subject fundamentals
The course aims at deepening the energy refurbishment of existing buildings and the energy performance assessment. The course has a vocational training profile and its main objective is to provide students with a complete procedure for energy audit and certification of large buildings.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and application of energy performance assessment methodologies for the existing buildings. Learning of the calculation methods to forecast the building energy demand for the different energy services (i.e. space heating, space cooling, ventilation, domestic hot water production, lighting, lifts and escalators).
Analysis and processing of real energy consumption data of buildings. Technical and economic evaluation of energy retrofit actions. Ability to draw up an energy audit report and an energy performance certificate.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Fundamentals of building energy balance, room moisture balance and energy need calculations. Concepts of thermal comfort and indoor air quality, indoor monitoring and measurement of thermo-physical quantities. Basic knowledge of building energy regulations.
Contents
Summary on indoor thermal comfort and user characterisation: thermo-hygrometric parameters of thermal comfort and indoor air quality, user models and occupant behaviour assessment. Classification and characterisation of energy services: space heating and space cooling, air conditioning, mechanical ventilation, domestic how water production, lighting, lifts and escalators. Classification and characterisation of technical building systems and thermal subsystems (heat generation, storage, distribution, control and emission).
European and Italian regulations framework on the energy efficiency in buildings: Directive 2010/31/EU (EPBD recast) on the building energy efficiency, Directive 2012/27/EU on the energy efficiency, Directive 2009/28/EU on renewable energy sources, Italian Legislative Decree no. 192/2005 and subsequent amendments, Italian Ministerial Decree 26/06/2015, Italian Legislative Decree no. 102/2014 and subsequent amendments, Italian Legislative Decree no. 28/2011.
Deepening of the building energy performance assessment according to international technical standards: holistic approach and types of energy assessments (EN ISO 52000), indoor environmental quality assessment (EN 16798-1 and ISO 17772-1), building energy needs (EN ISO 52016), thermal losses and efficiencies of technical building systems (EN 15316). Specifically, the following arguments will be analysed: building energy balance in quasi-steady-state conditions, calculation of thermal systems losses, of delivered energy and of primary energy use, taking into account the primary energy conversion factors of different energy carriers.
Use of data driven inverse models and calibration procedures according to technical standards (ASHRAE Guideline 14-2014). Data collection and in field measurements, and data cataloguing.
Presentation of energy efficiency measures and technologies for building refurbishment. Technical and economic analysis of investments for energy renovation (EN 15459).
Building energy certification. Basic notions of environmental certification.
Delivery modes
Teaching is organised both in theoretical and application lectures, and in exercises.
The exercises will cover applications of some aspects of energy and economic assessment. In addition, the students will develop a design exercise consisting in a detailed energy audit of a large building.

Assessment and grading criteria
The exam booking on internet is mandatory.
The exam consists of a written test and an oral examination. The written test is divided into two parts, as follows: a) a theory test consisting of statements of the true/false and/or synthetic definitions, b) one numerical exercise.
The oral examination (accessible only after a positive evaluation of the written part) consists of a discussion of the design exercise and some insights on the theory explained during the lectures.
