Subject fundamentals
The aim of the course is providing the knowledge and an overall framework of built environment, including both constructions and its environmental context. The attention is focused on the whole designing and building process including all the phases involved from the architectural design to the building, maintenance and management. Particular relevance will be given to the research of specific data about the history, the context, the project, the construction, the renovation and maintenance of the building.
In addition to previous topics, in relation to techniques and materials, a special attention is focused on construction process and considering different professionals involved in it.
The main goal is showing to students designer’s potential and responsibility, relationship with client and consumers, and above all describing the social impact of their work.
Therefore the teaching shows the current forms and the innovate application areas in which the profession job is related to the world.
Expected learning outcomes
Expected learning outcomes for students are:

- Acquiring awareness in choosing between different techniques, methods, materials, technological solutions provided by building industries nowadays;
- Acquiring awareness about the complexity of built environment, and acquiring also the capability of recognition of different technological aspects such as different materials;
- Learning new research instruments and techniques, focusing specially on interdisciplinary;
- Learning how to use current verbal, written and graphic instruments and techniques.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The interdisciplinary nature of teaching does not require special constraints.
Contents
Contents developed during the course comes from building analysis seen as a material heritage from different construction cultures linked to the role and the responsibility of different subjects of designing process, to study the different designing and research scenarios related to construction industry.
- Research tools focused to data source analysis, reaching and interpretation;
- Communication tools in technological and applied sciences field;
- Traditional and innovative materials;
- Low cost technologies and self-building process;
- Critical analysis of new assisted designing tools;
- Development of regulation: from morphological to performance;
- Direct connection between architectural quality and quality life: the social role of designer;
- Tools and techniques for emergency management;
- The guideline for sustainability designing;
- The structures and their intimate meaning: connection between building techniques and architectural shape;
- The structures and their environment: tools and methods for a green engineering;
- Natural or artificial lighting as a crucial component of living;
- Base research and applied one. Critical analysis of potentiality of current European financing methods;
Delivery modes
The teaching consists in frontal lessons and practical exercises in order to guide and develop personal critical capability with a personal subject agreed with the teacher.
The practical exercise will be a research dissertation to be delivered in written scientific articles mode and to be presented with an oral presentation as simulation of a conference participation.
Within the practical exercise there is the possibility of inserting different designing topics.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
During the lessons will be given bibliographical references about the different subjects and a written synthesis of frontal lessons will be uploaded on Portale della Didattica.
Assessment and grading criteria
In order to reach exam access is necessary the end, the deliver and the oral presentation of practical exercise.
Capability acquired and expected results will be evaluated during an oral examination about course contents and personal exercise topic.
The final mark will be numerical average between personal exercise and oral exam evaluations.
