PERIODO: FEBBRAIO - MARZO

The course is jointly offered by the Politecnico di Torino (DASP, Dottorato in Architettura: Storia e Progetto) and the EPFL (EDAR, Doctoral Program Architecture & Sciences of the City) to students of both institutions.
The course is organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication (1968) of Invention de Carouge, a text written by Swiss urban planner and art historian André Corboz. Focused on the study of the new town of Carouge (planned and built by the Savoyard State in the 18th century near Geneva, and later incorporated as a neighborhood of the latter), the book was an ambitious attempt to combine historical study, urban analysis and planning theory. The topic of the book also represented a vector of cultural exchange between Turin and Switzerland in the following years, most notably on the occasion of the exhibition on Carouge organized by Turin’s State Archives in the mid-1980s. The course aims at revisiting the book, assessing its legacy and discussing whether the analytical instruments that were deployed in it are still valid and what has changed in our understanding of the mutual links between urban history, urban design, and urban analysis.

Il corso è offerto congiuntamente dal Politecnico di Torino (DASP, Dottorato in Architettura: Storia e Progetto) e dall’EPFL (EDAR, Doctoral Program Architecture & Sciences of the City) a studenti di entrambe le istituzioni.
Il corso è organizzato in occasione del cinquantesimo anniversario della pubblicazione (1968) di Invention de Carouge, un testo scritto dall’urbanista e storico dell’arte svizzero André Corboz. Focalizzandosi sullo studio della città nuova di Carouge (pianificata e costruita dallo Stato sabaudo nel Settecento vicino a Ginevra, e in seguito divenuta un quartiere della città) il libro rappresentava un tentativo ambizioso di combinare studio storico, analisi urbana e teoria urbanistica. Il soggetto del volume rappresentò anche un vettore di scambio culturale tra Torino e la Svizzera negli anni successivi, in particolare in occasione della mostra su Carouge promossa dall’Archivio di Stato di Torino alla metà degli anni ottanta. Il corso si propone di ritornare sul volume, tracciare un bilancio delle sue eredità e discutere fino a che punto gli strumenti analitici che vennero usati in quell’indagine mantengano una qualche validità e cosa al contrario sia cambiato nel nostro modo di pensare i legami reciproci tra storia, progetto, analisi urbana.

The course will be articulated into three modules:
- A series of lectures and seminars in Lausanne (10 hours)
- A series of lectures and seminars in Torino (10 hours)
- A fieldwork experience in Carouge (10 hours)

Students will be required to attend the lectures and the activities and to take part in the collective fieldwork exercise in Carouge. They will be asked to give an oral presentation during the seminar and to prepare a final paper.

Il corso sarà articolato in tre moduli:
- Un blocco di lezioni e seminari a Losanna (10 ore)
- Un blocco di lezioni e seminari a Torino (10 ore)
- Un’esperienza di ricerca sul campo a Carouge (10 ore)

Agli studenti sarà richiesto di seguire le lezioni e le attività seminariali e di partecipare all’operazione collettiva di ricerca sul campo che si svolgerà a Carouge. Ogni studente dovrà preparare una presentazione orale da tenersi nel corso del seminario e redigere un paper conclusivo.
