Objectives and structure of the course
This course is open only to the PhD students that have successfully passed the previous course "Intellectual Property Rights, Technology Transfer and Hi-Tech Entrepreneurship I"
The course will involve a substantial development of a team project work in order to generate a comprehensive proposal for a new venture, that could be the starting point of a new startup. This part of the course will also involve a set of lectures dedicated innovation strategy, the assessment of final market characteristics, the identification of financial needs and related financial sources for a start-up. The project work will involve research activities for the collection of data to support the strategic planning of the new venture. There will be intermediate presentations to provide feedbacks on the advancement of the projects. Students will present the final results of their projects to a panel of practitioners that will include entrepreneurs, business angels and representatives of financial intermediaries.
The course is open to 40 students max.

II. Contents

Chapter 4: Innovation Strategy for startups

- Fundamentals of innovation strategy
- The role of hi-tech startups in innovation processes
- Managing strategy in startups: theory and cases
- Technology diffusion and the timing of market entry
- Technological standards, innovation and IPRs

Chapter 5: Exploitation models for IPRs in startups
- IP valuation methods
- Key elements of a licensing agreement
- Business cases on cross-licensing and enforcement

Chapter 6: Economics and Financial Projections
- The basics of economics and financials for a startup
- Life cycle stages and cash flow needs for a startup
- The sources of financial constraints
- The key actor: Business Angeles and the Venture Capital market
- Alternative sources of financing

III. Exam
The students will propose a comprehensive business plan for a new start-up based on a patent owned by Politecnico di Torino. The final report will include a detailed analysis of the patented technology, the proposed product/services, the relevant market, the entry strategies, the financial requirements and its staging, final recommendations on how to proceed.
Each team will also give a pitch in front of a panel of entrepreneurs, business angels and representatives of financial intermediaries.
Participation to the joint program with CERN and SAFM will be considered equivalent to this exam.
