Objectives of the course
The course presents the main fluid automation systems and their components. The course is structured to introduce the students to the main methodologies to set a fluid automation plan using both theoretical basis and virtual computing instruments.
Expected skills
The student will be competent in the field of the setup of a pneumatic system conceived for fluid automation both as far as the main parameters required to define the components characteristics and as dynamic performance analysis.
Applied mechanics.
Automatic system typologies and comparison (electric, hydraulic, pneumatic). Pneumatic components. Linear actuators and their main characteristics: stroke, seals, friction, dampers, anti-rotation provisions. Digital valves: typologies, piloting, control, flow rate, characterization. Proportional valves: characteristics, examples of application. Dynamics of a pneumatic system. Air treatment. Pneumatic sensors and flowmeters. Management of an automatic cycle: Grafcet, auxiliary signals, methodology to set a control unit. PLC and main languages to program.
Laboratories and/or exercises
The students develop in team both practical exercitation and simulating ones. First one are finalized to carry on an automatic cycle using pneumatic components. Second one is devoted to learn how to put in practice the equations necessaries to model the dynamic performance of a pneumatic systems, evaluating the sensitivity of the dynamics to the characteristics of the components.
