Objectives of the course
Aim of this course is to give the bases for the comprehension and the interpretation of chemical phenomena so that the student will be able to handle chemical arguments which he will encounter in the following courses and during his professional life.
Expected skills
At the end of this corse, the student will be able to evaluate the chemical characteristics of materials, and to understand some simple industrial chemical process.
It is considered as a prerequisite all chemical , physical and mathematical knowledge of high school level.
Fundamental definitions: the laws of chemistry ' atomic weight, the mole ' chemical formulas ' the periodic table of the elements.
The atomic model according to quantum chemistry.
The chemical bonding: introduction ' the ionic bond ' the covalent bond ' the metallic bond ' intermolecular bonds.
Matter in the gaseous state ' matter in the liquid state ' solutions ' matter in the crystalline state.
Thermochemistry ' Hess's law.
Reaction Kinetics.
Spontaneous chemical reactions.
Equilibrium in chemistry ' equilibrium shifting: Le Chatelier Law.
Electrolytes solutions: ionic dissociation ' strong and weak electrolytes ' acids and bases.
Equilibrium in aqueous solutions: water ionic product ' pH and indicators ' solubility product ' hydrolysis.
