Subject fundamentals
The goal of this subject is to introduce the fundamental of the thermodynamics of chemically reacting flows and of gasdynamics applied to IC engines. The main methodologies to analyze and modeling such phenomena in IC engines are investigated along with their applications to the design of the combustion systems in highly-efficient IC engines.
Expected learning outcomes
Competences needed to: estimate thermodynamic parameters in reacting flows; evaluate combustion parameters in IC engines; write energy balance for complex energy systems and calculate their efficiency and performance; apply computational fluid dynamic methodologies to design IC engine combustion systems.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Knowledge of the fundamentals of thermo fluid dynamics and Chemistry. Knowledge of the operating principles of IC engines and their subsystems and components, with specific reference to charging, fuel injection and combustion apparatuses. The knowledge of the fundamentals of pollutant formation in IC engines is also recommended.
