Objectives of the course
To supply a base knowledge about thermal systems and to take into account: design alternatives, calculation and sizing of components, architectural integration and normative constraints.
Expected skills
To choose and to size the most common heat exchangers. To calculate the efficiency of heat generators. To evaluate the thermal requirements of residential buildings. To know the options available to condition the indoor environment.
Prerequisites
Fluids mechanics and heat transfer.
Syllabus
Heat exchangers: types and applications. Calculation and sizing by means of software codes.
Thermal design of residential buildings. Thermal insulation of floors and lofts. Calculation of the transmittance of the building envelope and of the load during winter time; energy and power needs. Water vapor condensation inside walls.
Combustion systems. Mass and energy balance; efficiency and loss at the chimney. Burners and heat generators. Incinerators.
Thermal environmental comfort. Moist air transformations. Introduction to indoor air quality. HVAC systems design. Typologies of air conditioning and ventilation systems. Hydronic and aeraulic nets. Production of cold with refrigerating systems using vapor compression and absorbers.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Evaluation of convection heat transfer coefficient by means of a commercial CFD code (calculation carried out at the informatics laboratory)
Thermal design of a residential building (homework using indications and suggestions supplied by the teacher).
