Objectives of the course
The course goal is to gain an understanding and appreciation of the
fundamental principles and methodologies relevant to planning, operation and control of productive systems. The production system environment is analyzed in order to evaluate its performances and their relationships with controllable or uncontrollable factors and variables. On the basis of different functional models of production systems, the planning and control problems are analyzed according to different hierarchical levels, ranging from long-time capacity planning, to material flow management in the shop-floor. |
Prerequisites
Logistics and Industrial Production, Probability and statistics.
Knowledge of mathematical programming and informatics. |
Syllabus
Introduction to production systems in manufacturing.
Factory physics: performance measurements on workstation, flow lines, and plants; queue models; variability and randomness representation. Analysis of WIP capped systems and Throughput controlled systems. Comparison of performances of push and pull systems. Inventory management in deterministic environment: classic approaches and their limitations (EOQ and variants, Wagner-Within algorithm and heuristics) Inventory management in probabilistic environment: base stock system, newsvendor problem. Long-term planning: Capacity management, APP models, Lot-sizing models, heuristic approaches. Dependable demand management: MRP, MRPII, ERP and their limits. JIT Production control: applicability and limits. Scheduling algorithms and dispatching rules in push and pull production systems. |
Laboratories and/or exercises
Exercises will be assigned and solved along the course. Students will attend computer lab activities by several Software tools.
