Subject fundamentals
The aim of the course is to familiarize the student with the problems associated with the operation and management of production systems and the main operational methods used in this context. The production system is analyzed in order to evaluate its performances and their dependence on controllable or not controllable factors. The functional description of manufacturing systems is a prerequisite for the analysis of planning issues that are addressed at different hierarchical levels , from the long-term capacity planning to the management of material flows on the shop floor .
Expected learning outcomes
The students proactively acquire the competences. They should be able to understand the context of real problems and to select the most appropriate tools / techniques / approaches to solve them.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Elements of statistical and mathematical analysis , programming, mathematics, English language, basic computer knowledge .
Contents
Introduction to the industrial companies
Warehouse management under certain and uncertain situations.
Analysis of the hierarchical system for production management in PUSH systems : Demand forecasting , Aggregate production planning , Master production schedule , Material requirements planning, Detailed scheduling.
Study of the physical laws in production systems : Benchmarking line performance, Manufacturing line analysis based on queue models.
Analysis of the hierarchical system for production management in PULL systems: Demand forecasting , Aggregate production planning , WIP settings , Quota settings , Master production schedule , Detailed scheduling.
Study of the physical laws in production systems : Kanban system and Conwip system.
From Lean Manufacturing to Lean thinking.
Delivery modes
The exercises will be tightly integrated with the lessons. Laboratories consist of the management material flow in a manufacturing company using SAP.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
The suggested text is W.J. Hopp , M.L. Spearman , Factory Physics: Foundations of Manufacturing Management , McGraw -Hill Education . The teacher will provide superseding or supplementary texts during the lectures..
Assessment and grading criteria
The exam consists of a written test and an oral test (which may also include questions related to the laboratory activities). Written and oral examination must be carried out in the same exam. Only the students with sufficient results in the written test are admitted to the oral examination. The final grade is the average of written and oral grades.
