Objectives of the course
The course aims at giving a complete treatment about the full remote sensed data elaboration process (capture, evaluation, usage and application). The explained methods refer to passive sensors operating in a frequency range between microwaves and ultraviolet.

Physics, Basics on electromagnetism.

Syllabus
1. PASSIVE REMOTE SENSING FEATURES AND METHODS
2. THEORETICAL FUNDATIONS Electromagnetic spectrum, Radiometry, Optical systems overview. Sun, Earth atmosphere structure, Scattering and atmospheric absorption overview (Rayleigh scattering, Mie scattering). Atmosphere radiative transfer theory, Radiative Tranfer general equation deduction (RTE) in a parallel planes atmosphere: analytical solutions and numerical models. Tropospheric propagaton and Eikonal equation. 3. ELECTROMAGNETIC DIAGNOSTICS Rough surface scattering overview: Lambert surfaces. Object electromagnetic properties and spectral signatures. 4. SATELLITE SYSTEMS, SENSORS AND DEVICES Satellite orbits. Microwave radiometers, High resolution spectrometers, Mutispectrum scanners, Dual Optical Absorption Spectrometers, Interferometers. |
Laboratories and/or exercises
Remote-sensed data analysis and interpretation using GIS.
