Objectives of the course
This course introduces students to theoretical and practical aspects of machine design components, such as plates, shell, spring, welded joints.
Expected skills
By the end of this course students should have an understanding of the structural design of machine elements such as plates, shell, spring, welded joints.
Prerequisites
Solid mechanics, kinematics & dynamics engineering, materials engineering.
Syllabus
Springs.
Introduction to springs, Configuration of springs: flexural springs, torsion spring, helical springs, force-deflection characteristic. Helical spring: stress in spring stiffness, static and fatigue design, spring deflection. Multi-leaf spring: stress state, static and fatigue design.

Plates and shell
Theory of plates, reference systems, stress and strain state, stress strain relationship, load equilibrium, solution equation.
Axi-symmetrical plates, reference system, stress and strain state, uniform and concentrated loads, analytical solution
Shells of Revolution with Axisymmetric Loads - Membrane theory, Solution equations. Bending of axisymmetrical shells, local effects, Coates theory.

Welded joints
Loads in welded joints, Calculation methods for fillet welds (Eurocode), stress state, failure criteria,
Laboratories and/or exercises
Example problems will be solved to help students understand how to use analytical knowledge to solve practical problems. Practical computer lab session will be dedicated to solve spring design problems.
A detailed report of the lab project must be turned in at the end of the course.
