Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The course will be mainly addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate foreign students, in architecture and civil engineering. Furthermore, it is strongly suggested to all other foreign students visiting the Politecnico di Torino, who can get additional credits in the humanities within their curricula. Being thoroughly held in English, the course intends to provide all foreign students with a basic knowledge of the history of the town and its region, through its architecture and urban plans. Its fundamental aims will be to make them familiar with the context where they are supposed to live and work for a number of months, and facilitate their comprehension of other courses, generally held in Italian.
Competenze attese
Students will be asked to develop their abilities to understand the history of the city and architectures of Turin, within their cultural and intellectual context. In particular, they should try to define a general framework of key figures and events and compare some consolidated critical and interpretative approaches. Moreover, they will be asked to acquire a general knowledge of the basic iconography and build up a commonly shared repertory of icons, architectures and buildings. Attendance is compulsory, as a part of the course requirements.
The course intends to provide foreign students of the Politecnico di Torino with an introduction to the city of Turin and its neighbourhood. Although its main focus will be the history of the town and its architectures, no particular architectural or historical skills are required, but a basic knowledge of the architectural and urban planning English terminology. Some general acquaintance with Italian history, art and architecture would be appreciated.
The course will focus on the major trends, events, key figures and works in Turin architectural and urban history, from antiquity to the present. It will alternate lessons with walking tours, exercises and tests, dedicated to some of the most important urban contexts and architectures in town. Discussions with active participation will be strongly encouraged. Discussion and tests will be admitted either in Italian, or in English, French, Spanish and Catalan.
Principle textbooks will be Ventisei itinerari di architettura a Torino / Architectural Walks in Torino, Torino: SIAT, 2003; and CARLO OLMO and VERA COMOLI (a cura di), Torino. Architectural Guide, Torino: Allemandi, 1999.
Further reference readings will be suggested among the essays included in Storia di Torino, 9 vols., Torino: Einaudi, 1997-2002.
