Objectives of the course
Localization and navigation methods have suffered deep changes in the last century after the introduction of radiowaves and satellites. Knowledge form many disciplines is needed to describe the new satellite systems for navigation, the course is mainly concerned with electronic systems of frequency and time measurements.
Syllabus
Lessons
From traditional navigation to radionavigation, position surfaces (cones, yperboloids, spheres), radionavigation measurements (frequencies, time of fligt differences, time of arrivals), time scales, clocks for space.
Propagation on the Earth, through the atmosphere and through the ionosphere.
Examples of radionavigation systems: LORAN C, Omega, TRANSIT, GPS
Time transfer by means of satellites.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Laboratory: numerical computations with quantities spread on a wide range (use of dB, Np). Numerical checks of expressions introduced at lesson.
A visit is planned to the laboratory where the Italian time scale is realized.
