Subject fundamentals
This course focuses on two main targets. The first target is to allow students to create a practical and effective idea of the communication society. What does communication imply? How should we study the communication? What do we mean by recipient and "audience"? How do we analyze a communicative process? These are some of the questions which the course introduces and to which it is aimed to find answers, also by proposing practical analyses on concrete forms of communication of the current media culture and of professional life.

The second target is writing. To be able to write is on of the most required skills in the present society, not only at university but also, and overall, in professional life, particularly when concerning engineers. In which sense are writing and communication connected? Can we use specific techniques to write with clarity, conciseness and precision? What does "legibility" mean and how to gain a clear, communicative, precise and rigorous writing? The course is aimed at testing students with these questions and is intended for developing the techniques which lead to a selectively targeted and well done written communication.

In summary, the objectives of the course are the following:

- to introduce students to communication
- to permit students to develop a clear and distinct representation of the different communication models, varying with the involved media (particularly written ones)
- to train on the main writing features and to accustom to writing texts as clearly, precisely and rigorously as possible
- to allow the knowledge of texts used in the social and productive world (e-mail, specifications, manuals, progress reports, technical proposals etc.)
