Subject fundamentals
The course aims at presenting methods for the analysis of energy conversion plants, with particular focus on the optimal use of primary energy, process integration and design improvement. The course includes lectures and practices. Lessons are focused on the modeling techniques for complex energy systems, on the analysis techniques such as pinch analysis and exergy analysis. The technical aspects related to some energy conversion technologies are also presented, These systems will be the case studies proposed in some of the practices.
Expected learning outcomes
The student is expected to learn the techniques of analysis of energy conversion processes, aimed at the process integration, optimization and design improvement. The student is also expected to be able to apply these methods to energy conversion systems.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Thermodynamics and heat transfer
Introduction to the course. Brief reference to the evolution of energy scenarios and issues of energy research, with particular reference to industrial systems. Role of integration, optimization and design improvement of energy processes. (3 h lesson)
The method of pinch analysis. Analysis of the production process and determination of the constraints of the process. Identification of the principal streams and graphical construction of the composite curve. Choosing the minimum temperature difference; thermodynamic and economic implications. Graphical determination of the pinch point. Analytical calculation of the pinch point. Representation of heat exchanger networks. Rules for tracking the network of exchangers corresponding to the minimum energy requirement. Minimum number of heat exchangers. Graph theory and Euler theorem. Determination of the network corresponding to the minimum number of heat exchangers. Relaxation of the system. (20 h lesson)
Application of the method of the pinch analysis in industrial production plants and energy conversion plants: examples in the food and chemical industry, innovative installations for the incineration of municipal solid waste, integrated cycles of fuel cells at high temperatures (FC + ORC, FC + GT), systems retrofit for CO2 capture. (12 h practice)
Exergetic analysis. Determining the equation of energy used. The reference environment. Calculation of exergy physics and chemistry. Use exergetic analysis in the design improvement of energy plants. (15 h lesson)
Exergetic analysis application, such as: district heating (sizing and calculation of a district heating network, network analysis at low temperature, analysis of utilities at low temperature, third pary access, thermal storage), heat pump systems and their integration in industrial processes, geothermal energy. (10 h practice)
Delivery modes
In the course, some specific practices are developed in the classroom in order to propose the application of the various methodologies to industrial plants and energy conversion systems. These practices are designed to allow both the familiarization of the student to the exergy and pinch analysis, and deepening of the aspects related to their use for the design and operation improvement of real plants.

Assessment and grading criteria
The exam consists of a written test, composed by two parts:
- two exercises, one on exergy analysis and one on pinch analysis. This part aims at evaluating the ability of the student to apply the techniques discussed during lessons and practices.
- three questions covering the theoretical aspects of the analysis techniques as well as the specific technologies shown during the course. This part aims at evaluating the knowledge of the students on the aspects that cannot be evaluated through the numerical exercizes.
The final mark takes into account for 9/10 of the exercizes and the questions for the remaining part.
