Subject fundamentals
The aim of Mechanics of Machines teaching is to give important knowledge on kinematics, on static and dynamic rigid body equilibrium and on the main type of systems for the movement transmission.
Expected learning outcomes
The subjects here presented want to give to the student skills on the rigid body movement and equilibrium in the plane, in order to analyze the rigid body in the plane both in static and dynamic conditions and with or without friction.
Furthermore the main types of components for the movement transformation or transmission are analyzed.
The teaching method is based both on theoretical parts and on exercises, in order to improve the student’s skills in the study of different mechanical systems.
There is also a practical experience in laboratory on some of the components analyzed during the lessons.
A short technical report on the laboratory experience is required to the student and is evaluated in the final score.
In this way the student can also learn how to use and analyze experimental data.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Mechanics of Machines requires knowledge of Mathematical Analysis I and II and Physic I.
Kinematics: rigid body kinematics in the plane; velocity and acceleration of rigid body in the plane; velocity center; Coriolis acceleration; articulated mechanism (about 10h of lessons and exercises).

Main links and their degree of freedom analysis (about 1h).

Center of mass and inertial moment (about 1h).

Static and dynamic equilibrium of rigid body in the plane: external and internal forces; equilibrium equations; quantity of motion and moment of quantity of motion (about 12h of lessons and exercises).

Analysis of the main kind of friction, Reye Hypothesis, friction in the links and examples (about 6h of lessons and exercises).

Analysis of the main components based on friction: brakes; belts; clutch; screw systems (about 18h of lessons and exercises).

Analysis and study of: cylindrical gears; conical gears; ordinary and epicyclical gears systems; automotive epicyclical differential system; asymmetric differential system (about 16h of lessons and exercises).

Analysis and study of load-motor systems using gears reducer or clutch (about 6h of lessons and exercises).

Analysis and study of free and forced vibrations in systems with 1 degree of freedom (about 10h of lessons and exercises).
Contents (Prof. G. Eula)
- Main rules of mechanics applied to rigid parts: motion of a rigid part; kinematic chains; kinematic analysis of planar linkages; constraints and degrees of freedom in rigid parts; rigid parts static and dynamic behaviour; energy equation.
- Forces acting in mechanical systems: elastic forces; adherence and friction phenomena; rolling resistance; dynamic analysis of standard mechanical systems (mechanisms, mechanical power transmission devices, vehicles) etc...
- General characteristics of mechanical power transmission systems: joints, speed ratio, efficiency, transient and steady state conditions; inertial actions and inertial equivalent momentum etc...
- Components of a mechanical power transmission system: clutches and brakes; belts; gears; and gear trains; screw coupling.
- Mechanical vibrations: free and forced vibrations in a one-degree-of-freedom system.

Delivery modes
The Mechanics of Machines teaching has about 40h of lessons and 38h of exercises done with the all students and 1.5h in laboratory with students divided in groups (1.5h for each group).
During this experimental experience tests on benches with belts and epicyclical gears systems are carried on, measuring angular velocity, force, torque and elaborating the experimental data by means of tables and graphs.
The students elaborate a technical report on the laboratory experience.
These technical reports (one for each test bench) are evaluated by the Professor before the end of the teaching.

Assessment and grading criteria
The Mechanics of Machines exam consists in a test on the whole program, both lessons and exercises with the same difficulty of those proposed during the teaching.
The minimum test score is 18/30.
The final evaluation is obtained adding the test score to the laboratory experience evaluation.

The exam consists in solving mechanical problems and in aswering theoretical questions, both related to the topics explained.
