Objectives of the course
The module aims at supplying the fundamentals concepts about construction, thermodynamics and fluidynamics for the understanding and the analysis of operations of single fluid-flow machines and the energy system in which they are inserted.
The abilities provided to the students allow they to choose right solutions for components, machines and their applications, about the functional, energetic, economical and environmental aspects.
The preparation experience will be the basis for comprehensive understanding of subsequent training courses for those who choose to access the Master of Science Degree.
Expected skills
The skills acquired about thermodynamical, fluidynamical and functional aspects, allow the future engineer to develop quantitative assessments and calculations about machines and energy systems to take the right decisions from the scientific, technical and economical point of view.
The preliminary knowledge acquired in the courses of Thermodynamics and Applied Mechanics.
Generalities of fluid-flow machines and energy systems, definitions and classification
Reminders of Thermodynamics, Thermochemistry and Fluidynamics to apply to machinery and energy systems
Fluid flow trough nozzles and diffusers
Work interactions between moving surfaces and fluid
Power plants: efficiency, consumption, energy balance of systems and components
Cogeneration and combined cycles plants
Power extraction and power addiction turbomachines
Volumetric machines: volumetric compressors, internal combustion engines
Laboratories and/or exercises
The classroon training consists in solving exercises and practical problems by applying the concepts covered in the lessons. The aim of training is to give the students the order of magnitude of the main parameters and to improve their degree of understanding.

Laboratories visit are provided for direct observation of machines, component and instruments.
