Subject fundamentals
This workshop is aimed at obtaining specific competence in exterior and interior lighting design, providing skills on visual comfort and safety lighting, and explaining tools and methods on light measurement and lighting calculation codes.
Expected learning outcomes
A basic knowledge on lighting and photometric principles is required to succesfully attend the workshop.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
At the end of this workshop the student will be able to draw up an interior or exterior lighting plan, ranging from design requirements to lighting simulation and numeric control, through manual calculation procedures and specific photometric software.
Contents
TOPICS:
- Light sources and lighting systems in indoor and outdoor spaces
- Lighting standards and design criteria
- Tools and methods for on-site testing lighting systems
- Software for indoor and outdoor lighting design
- Case studies for lighting design
During this workshop students will deal with a real case study. Students will be supported during on-site measurements, lighting design process and specific lighting software usage.
Delivery modes
Practical activities and technical visits will be organised and carried out by the Environmental Control Systems Laboratory of Polytechnic of Turin (LAMSA, arch. Gabriele Piccablotto, arch. Rossella Taraglio) offering several opportunities to meet international lighting designers and to visit companies in the lighting sector.

Assessment and grading criteria
During this workshop students will focus on specific case studies. Students are allowed to work in groups of 2 or 3 persons. Time for discussion and plan review is provided, supported by academic and professional experts in lighting.
The examination consists in the knowledge, presentation and exposure of:
- lighting design concept
- lighting plan requirements
- numeric results obtained by manual calculation and specific software
- all the topics exposed during the workshop
The final evaluation is specific for each student and based on an average score according to:
- Maturity reached, motivation and engagement
- Active participation
- Awareness in technical language
- Lighting design contents
- Effectiveness of oral presentation
