Subject fundamentals
The course aims to teach the students basic elements of the micro- and nanotechnology world. Starting from basic elements of physics and chemistry, the course will introduce the theory and technology at the base of engineering application of nanoscience.
The definition of nanotechnology, history, biomimetic examples will be introduced. Synthesis and preparation techniques of nanomaterials will be reported with examples of various nanomaterials, including grapheme, carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles and nanowires of various nature. For every nanomaterials, it will be reported on the functionality and properties, related applications in the fields of electronics, sensing, medicine, biology and energy.
The different characterization techniques will be introduced to students, including electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction.
Basic concepts of MEMS/NEMS, mechanical resonating structures (microcantilever) and nanoelectronics starting from fabrication techniques and proposing case studies.
Topics such as ethics, safety, toxicology and communication will be also proposed to students.

A part the theoretical classes, laboratory practice will be proposed, as well as visit to specialized laboratories. In particular, the course is organized in 30 hours of theoretical classes (3 credits) and 30 hours of laboratory practice (3 credits) where students will be divided in 6 parallel groups.

The theoretical classes will take place at the headquarter of del Politecnico di Torino in the first 7 weeks. In the following 7 weeks, laboratory practices will take place at the Department of Applied Science and Technology of Politecnico di Torino or at the Chi-Lab of Chivasso, Politecnico di Torino (http://www.chilab.polito.it/).

The laboratories are supervised experimental activities and/or calculations where students , divided in groups pf few people, will take part to one or more research activity related to nanotechnology under the supervision of an active researcher in the field.

The final examination will be based on:
- Report about the laboratory practice on micro e nanotechnologies (decided with the course professor)
- Oral exam consisting in an oral presentation about laboratory activity and questions related to the theoretical classes.
