Subject fundamentals
The course is taught in Italian.

The course’s purpose is to give the students all the necessary tools needed to fully understand the market, the workflow, the esthetics and the technology on which special effects (SFX) and especially visual effects (VFX) products are based and developed. The course aims to give the students the competences to evaluate and follow-up a production iter of a VFX product, for each sector of the market (e.g. cinema, commercials, TV or live performances), from pre-production to post-production.
Expected learning outcomes
- Knowledge of VFX and SFX history
- Knowledge of the workflow: concept, storyboarding, previsualization, production, post-production, color correction
- Knowledge of VFX and SFX techniques
- Ability to choose the best VFX o SFX technique or software for the specific aesthetic and economic context
- VFX Market and budgeting
- Teamwork abilities for designing and producing audiovisual VFX products
- Knowledge of the importance of the narrative component of VFX products
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
- Knowledge of filmic languages
- basics of storytelling
- basics of video editing e filming techniques
- basics of computer graphics and computer animation

If those requirements are not met by the students, additional educational material will be provided.
Contents
Concept, Preproduction, Previsualization, filming techniques, production design, esthetics and languages(1 cfu)

- History and market of VFX and SFX (1 cfu)
- Study and application of basic techniques:
- SFX: basics of make-up, basics of in-camera effects, basics of stop motion, basics of sound effects (1 cfu).
- VFX: Chroma key, matte painting, motion capture, motion graphics and animation, color correction, 2D-3D integration, basics of VFX for live performances, projection mapping (2 cfu)

- Hardwares, softwares, formats, data capture, image compression, Computer graphics for VFX and digital compositing workflows (2 cfu)
Delivery modes
The class is structured as follows
- Traditional lectures in which the main part of the teaching program are analyzed in-depth
- The analysis of a specific case-history for each topic
- Analysis and debate on case-histories proposed by students
- Lectures and exercises with the purpose of fully understand the workflow on specific softwares. The exercises will be parallel to the traditional lectures and functional to the creation of several audiovisual products

The lessons will be supported by additional material in PPT format, the recording of each software exercise and a list of in-depth tutorial videos for each teaching topic.

The students will have the possibility to discuss alternative textbooks with the teacher.
Assessment and grading criteria
Either for attending or non-attending students, the final test consists of the presentation of the audiovisual products created by the students during the course (max 20’) and a written test to verify the notions learnt during the classes and through the textbooks.

The final grade will be calculate basing on the projects presented by the students (60%), the results of the written test (30%) and the evaluation of students’ active participation and personal content elaboration (10%).
