Subject fundamentals
The multidisciplinary laboratory aims to provide the technical and cultural tools for the development of communication projects in the field of the visual identity and its applications, institutional paperless promotional and editorial graphics, to signals, to packaging , etc. The different thematic contributions are integrated with the objective of addressing the communication product requirements related to the specific issues of the different phases of the construction process: from design issues (cultural, ethical, functional, compositional methodological-type design, ..) to the productive ones (basic technical knowledge of graphic and paper industry processes, technological feasibility, equipment and production processes, as well as the materials used for the realization of the products). The Laboratory is located on the half-year and 2nd semester, address GRAPHIC & VIRTUAL DESIGN: it completes and deepens the theoretical information provided by other courses in previous semesters.
Expected learning outcomes
- Knowledge in the field of design culture and the ways and methods of approach.
- Knowledge in the field of production techniques of graphic-paper stationery.
- Knowledge in graphics
- Ability to develop analyzes to create awareness of a specific design theme or sector of the market, in order to identify constraints and opportunities of the project.
- Ability to deal with a visual communication project, to respond effectively to the specific requirements, to evaluate the feasibility and manage phases.
- Ability to communicate clearly a project proposal through effective graphic representations.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Depth knowledge in the field of design methodology, skills related to the representation of the project, knowledge of the environmental requirements of the design.
The laboratory is interdisciplinary and integrates the disciplines:

The activity, a predominantly project-based, focuses on the development of a thematic defined each year, divided into tutorials and lectures. Among the topics of the lectures: Design Methodology: Briefing, scenario, the system of needs, from planning to escutiva phase; communication systems and promotion of a product / service; Development of graphic projects and communication: ideation, steps and presentation types.

GRAPHICS (6 credits, 60 hours)
The business, which covers the front and communications exercises, aims to provide the theoretical tools capable of supporting the phase of the trial. In particular practical activities will focus on the design theme developed in the course of Design for Visual Communication 1. Among the themes of the lectures: The grill: types and development; The font and style; Mechanics of the text (line spacing, paragraph, margins, alignment); texture; Using color; Sign, meaning, significance; visual and corporate identity; Brand and logo: language and functions; Perception of the narrative structure of the image; visual hierarchy of graphical elements; Use of the image.

The activity, both theoretical and practical, has as its goal the definition of production tools in graphics appropriate to achieve certain product types and at different scales: from the coordinated company to book and magazines. In particular esercitativa activities will focus on the design theme developed in the course of Design for Visual Communication 1.
Among the topics of the lectures: Software for graphic products.
Sizes of greater use file: native files, bitmap, raster and vector files, file size and resolution, creating ps and PDF files and use in workflows;
Typography and text editing: the duodecimal system, character classification, pagination rules, publishing rules and proofreading;
Color inks: an outline of colorimetry and ICC profiles, CMYK, RGB and Pantone systems, the composition of the inks; Forming: preparation and techniques employed, signatures and taxation, new technologies: work-flow and computer to plate; Paper and its problems; graphics industry, entipologia and printing processes: planographic (offset and web offset), rilievografico (Flexography), incavografico (gravure), permeografico (screen printing); the PCB layout: from folding machines, gathering, stitching, paperback and their operation.
Delivery modes
The laboratory is interdisciplinary and consists of three disciplines (6 credits) organized lectures and short tutorials (4 CFU) plus an in-depth contribution (2CFU) aimed at the design of macro-enabled Laboratory tutorial for visual communication, a fundamental discipline in training the designer.
Each year, the laboratory will have a common thematic focus (coordinated from the company to the book, to magazines, to product packaging), within which will be structured exercises proposed by the different disciplines.
This activity is developed in groups (max 3-4 per group), who together will work in order to develop new products rich in cultural content, meaningful and sustainable from a technical and production standpoint.
There are planned interventions of external professionals, visits to companies and at trade fairs.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Summary of topics, a copy of the powerpoint slides used during the lessons and documents useful to the organization of group activities are available on the educational portal.

Assessment and grading criteria
The Laboratory requires a constant frequency in consideration of the final judgment which will be expressed by a single final grade. The activities will be monitored through interim evaluations, both single discipline and seminarial with the participation of all disciplines. These interim evaluations will compete at the final judgment, based on the presentation and discussion of final papers (written and graphic). The laboratory activities are carried out by students in groups merged, but the judgment for each student will be an individual judgment (expressed with a single vote), taking account of the mid-term evaluations (written, oral, graphic) mono- and seminars, the evaluation of the presentation and discussion of final papers and individual participation in this work and the presentation moments.
