Subject fundamentals
The Course is related to the study of thermoplastic polymeric materials processing with a specific part on design and injection molding simulation. In the second part specific attention will be focused on technologies such as fillers for polymeric materials, polymeric blends, rubber technology, foams, paints and varnishes. Finally will be presented the fundamentals for selection of polymeric materials and design of plastic objects.
|
Expected learning outcomes
During the course all the aspects of polymer technologies will be studied, taking into account the problems related to industrial scale-up of the processing. Particularly the processing techniques (injection molding and extrusion, thermoforming and blow molding) to form plastic objects will be known. The student will be able to selected the right material and the right process in order to produce different plastic objects.

Contents
The first part of the program (4 CFU) will be focused on the following topics: morphology and structures of polymers with reference to their production methods. Viscoelasticity, polymer melt rheology. Thermoplastic polymer technologies. Compounding and reactive mixing.
The second part of the program (2 CFU) will be dedicated to the design and simulation of the injection molding process with the use of a simulation software. The third part of the program (4 CFU) will be focused on the following topics: Additives, reinforcing agents and fillers in polymers. Polymeric blends. Rubber technology. Expanded polymers and their technologies. Polymer coatings. List of the more important classes of polymers (commodities and technopolymers), advanced polymers and biopolymers. Definition of criteria to select materials for different plastic objects |
Delivery modes
Laboratories on rheological characterization of molten polymers and on thermoplastic polymers processing (compounding, extrusion, injection molding) and morphological characterization of filled materials. The laboratories will be carried out at the Alessandria branch of Politecnico and for the students the travels will be arranged by bus.

Assessment and grading criteria
Assessment and grading criteria
Written exam: There will three parts for the final exam on: The first part with both open and closed 20 questions regarding the Processing technologies of polymers. The second part with 15 open questions on the technologies about the filler polymers, foams, elastomers and rubbers and coatings. Moreover will be also request to identify the ideal material to produce a plastic object. The third part is dedicated to the laboratory experiences. The students will be describe three of them to demonstrate to know the operative methods to produce and characterize plastic objects. During the exams it is not possible to use books and slide. Oral exam: unscheduled Final Mark: The final mark will be calculated by the weighted average of the marks obtained in the three examinations, taking into account the number of credits assigned to each part. |
