Subject fundamentals
The course presents the characteristics of the electric machines and drives widely adopted in the electric/hybrid propulsion for rail traction and road vehicles; some elements are also addressed to the electrification of aeronautical and marine transport systems. For the different applications, the principal architectures and components (motors, power electronics converters and control systems) are discussed and analysed on the basis of the performance required to the propulsion system.
Expected learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to provide the system knowledge to evaluate the issues related with the electric drives for the propulsion in the transport systems. The objective implies to develop in the student the capabilities to:
- know the applications and the design constraints for the electric drives in the different transports systems, in particular in the rail and road systems;
- know the basic issues for the technical specification of electric drives; particular attention is paid to the interaction with the vehicle (mechanical coupling) and with the supply system;
- know the different technology options in connection with the required performances and duties;
- know the dynamic behavior of the electric drives and estimate the boundary conditions for their exploitation in the application framework.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The prequisites include the basic notions of electrotechnics, mechanics and electric machines.

Introduction and historical notes in the use of the electric energy in transportations.
State of the art and trends, "more electric transports".
Elements on principal rotating electric machines.
Electric machines adjustment.
Components and power electronics converters (functional aspects).
Control systems and strategies for electric drives (principal characteristics).
Electric power supply systems.
Mechanical coupling systems (elements).
Energy and thermal issues.
On-board integration issues.

Network supplied systems: rail traction
Electric networks for rail traction and substations for railway supplies.
Direct current traction systems with rheostatic adjustment.
Direct current traction systems with electronic adjustment.
Alternate current traction systems.
Multi-voltage traction systems.
Diesel-hybrid traction systems.
High speed traction systems.

On board supplied systems: electric and hybrid vehicles
On board energy storage/generation.
Traction systems for pure electric vehicles.
Charging equipments and infrastructures.
Hybrid traction architectures: series, parallel, series/parallel.
Interactions with the thermal engine.
Delivery modes
The teaching is organized in two main parts with lessons focused on road and rail transports.
The classroom exercises are focused on examples of preliminary specifications of technical requirements.

Assessment and grading criteria
The student will be asked to answer written questions to demonstrate his knowledge on specific topics included in the teaching program.
The competence level of the candidate will be evaluated in terms of:
- knowledge of the applications, working principles and technological options for the electric drives for transportation;
- capability in preliminary technical specifications of performances, features and characteristics of electric drives for the applications.
