Electrical propulsion for transport systems

The course presents the characteristics of the electric machines and drives widely adopted in the electric/hybrid propulsion for rail traction and road vehicles; some elements are also addressed to the electrification of aeronautical and marine transport systems. For the different applications, the principal architectures and components (motors, power electronics converters and control systems) are discussed and analysed on the basis of the performance required to the propulsion system.
Expected learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to provide the system knowledge to evaluate the issues related with the electric drives for the propulsion in the transport systems. The objective implies to develop in the student the capabilities to:
- know the applications and the design constraints for the electric drives in the different transports systems, in particular in the rail and road systems;
- know the basic issues for the technical specification of electric drives; particular attention is paid to the interaction with the vehicle (mechanical coupling) and with the supply system;
- know the different technology options in connection with the required performances and duties;
- know the dynamic behavior of the electric drives and estimate the boundary conditions for their exploitation in the application framework.

The prequisites include the basic notions of electrotechnics, mechanics and electric machines.

On board supplied systems: electric and hybrid vehicles

• Interactions with the thermal engine.
The teaching is organized in two main parts with lessons focused on road and rail transports.
The classroom exercises are focused on examples of preliminary specifications of technical requirements. Furthermore, modeling exercises are developed to simulate the powertrains characteristics and the vehicles performances.

Assessment and grading criteria
The student will be asked to answer written questions to demonstrate his knowledge on specific topics included in the teaching program.
The competence level of the candidate will be evaluated in terms of:
- knowledge of the applications, working principles and technological options for the electric drives for transportation;
- capability in preliminary technical specifications of performances, features and characteristics of electric drives for the applications.
The examination consists of a written test lasting 2 hours. During the written test, textbooks, notes and formularies cannot be consulted. Moreover, it is not possible to bring in the classroom electronic devices having web access (e.g., smartphone, smartwatch and tablet). It is permitted the use of the calculator. The use of any didactic materials is not allowed.
The examination is passed if the written test gets a mark from 18/30 up to 30/30 (including the laude). The mark will be communicated to the students through a message on the Teaching Portal, approximately two/three days after the test. The students can look at the corrected test and its mark during a general meeting after the publication of the marks. The date of the meeting will be communicated to the students through a message on the Teaching Portal.
To take the exam the student must book the exam through the Teaching Portal.
