Subject fundamentals
In the Design Atelier, first year students are called upon, for the first time, to tackle architectural design as a whole, focusing on the general problems and disciplinary content. The workshop is seem as a practical experience providing an introduction to the composition and town planning aspects of design, but also as an opportunity to build up a more extensive reasoning on architecture, its disciplinary specifics and its complexity.
The design exercise proposed become the central moment of the first year students training: a guided experience of architectural design, considered not as the pure formalisation of a preformed demand, but as a research into its tendency to positively influence the transformation of the city and the territory.
Expected learning outcomes
Module Architectural and Urban Composition (10 credits)
The work of the module of Architectural and Urban Composition will focus on the distributive characters of buildings, on the theories and techniques of architectural design, on the "elementary vocabulary" of the design, on the critical reading of some case studies, through lectures and investigations seeking to identify a shared world of architectures, chosen in different historical periods for their emblematic character and re-proposed as a reference, starting point or suggestion for new projects.
More or less complex project issues, directly connected to the city, its history and its construction over time will be addressed. Particular attention will be paid to the identification of settlement principles, to problems of composition, distribution, construction, of aggregation of volumes in space and of orientation and location with respect to a real place.
The study of figurative and compositional paradigms on large and small scale (house - town - territory) will be accompanied — in parallel with the module of Urban Design, but also with the other teachings of the second semester of the first year (Lab Design and Surveying of architecture and courses of Morphology and design of structures and of Architectural Technology) — by checks on the building structure, the mechanical construction of the single object (?), with particular attention to the physical qualities of materials and the search of appropriateness.
Technical disciplines, in this case — through specific moments of confrontation — will contribute in association with the disciplines of composition and town-planning to the control of the design process and to the rational representation of architectural design.

Module Urban Design (6 credits)
The module aims at providing students with the tools for analysis of the territorial and urban context in which the project is located, directing the design choices to the solution the problems that the environment poses, and to the awareness of the rules controlling its transformations.
Initially, the characteristics of the urban phenomenon, the evolution of the control of these phenomena with the birth of the discipline of urban planning as a specific technique, the different forms of interpreting urban and regional context will be described through a series of lessons. Subsequently, the application of the techniques of analysis and representation of the territorial context and of the regulatory framework will be verified in the concreteness of the project.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
It is essential to know the basics of mathematics, drawing and architectural history given in the first semester.
"To darn": the exercise area is located within the town of Lanzo and is characterized by a urban fringe situation, between urbanity, agricultural and natural landscape. The goal of the design is to enhance this portion of fragmented and formally uncertain territory.
Lectures are preparatory to the design at different scales, developed in the classroom. The two disciplines, composition and town planning, alternate in the contributions in order to allow the student to deal sequentially the various problems emerging from the project.
Delivery modes
After the inspection of the site, students will proceed with the first stage of knowledge of the area of intervention on which will overlap the development of the project at different scales: master plan, urban design project and the study of a residential building at the architectural scale. The first two points will be developed in small groups (3 students / group); the last one will be elaborate individually.

Assessment and grading criteria
The commission, composed by the professors from the two disciplines, jointly evaluate the project. Then, teachers will assess students with individual interview on the lessons and the bibliography content.
