Objectives of the course
The course gives basic foundations on electrical communications systems. It covers noise in telecommunications, analogue transmission, PCM techniques and source information theory.
Prerequisites
Signal Theory, Basic mathematical courses.
Syllabus
The module is devoted to the following topics on telecommunication theory:
Introduction on electrical communications: analogue and digital transmission, guided and free-space propagation, frequency bands
Noise in electronic circuits and its effects on telecommunication systems
Amplitude and Frequency modulation (AM and FM): principles, performance
Frequency division multiplexing (FDM)
Sampling and quantization on analogue signals: principles and performance of PCM systems
Source coding: information, entropy, compression and the Huffman coding
Bibliography
