Subject fundamentals
The main aim of the subject is to examine integrated techniques of the design and process utilised in the manufacturing to reduce time to market. Fundamentals is the availability three-dimensional CAD model, in order to exchange of date the standard formats are described. The link between computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing is discussed. Moreover, the additive manufacturing technology are describe to produce complex functional parts, directly without furthermore processing. Finally, to complete the product and process integration, the CAPP systems are discuss to planning process with computer aided.
Expected learning outcomes
The subject would provide students a deepen knowledge of the modern technologies of computer aided manufacturing, developing the skill to select the suitable manufacturing strategy depending on product, manufacturing amount and time compression techniques to reduce product and process development time.
The student will be able to make assessments on the development and manufacturing strategies, to formulate and develop new approaches to achieve greater integration to reduce time and increase the competitiveness of manufacturing companies.
At the end of the course, the student will have to:
1. Know the systems and computer-aided manufacturing software applications on the market;
2. Identify the time compression techniques to reduce the time of product / process development
3. Use additive manufacturing techniques and reverse engineering;
4. Apply these techniques to practical cases.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The student taking the subject should have technical knowledge of industrial design, three-dimensional CAD modeling techniques, manufacturing technologies in particular burr removal machine and manufacturing cycle. It is necessary that the student have the confidence with the use of computer.
Contents
1. Concurrent Engineering and CAD/CAM integration.
Integrate explanation of product and process;
Explanation of CAD/CAM integration;
Hardware e software to integration CAD with CAM systems;
Example of integration CAD/CAM.

2. Group Technology
Set of parts;
Codification of sets of parts;
Manufacturing cell.

3. Manufacturing process planning
Problems of CAPP system;
Variation CAPP System;
Generative CAPP System.

4. Additive manufacturing (AM)
Layer manufacturing philosophy and convenience;
Integration with CAD systems;
Stabilized manufacturing processes;
Systems in development;
Consideration of performance of different additive manufacturing.

5. Additive manufacturing applications
Rapid prototype;
Rapid tool;
Rapid casting;
Rapid manufacturing.

6. La reverse engineering (RE)
Reverse engineering philosophy;
Methods and systems to collection of date;
Scan systems with and without contact;
Reconstruction of the mathematical model of the copied object;
Acceptance testing
Integration with additive manufacturing.
Delivery modes
Tasks, that are carried out in RMLAB laboratory, Dipartimento di Ingegneria Gestionale e della Produzione, affect:
3D CAD redesign of plastic or metal parts in order to use additive manufacturing technology without furthermore tools.
Use of Revers Engineering techniques to manufacture of parts and test pf manufacturing.

Moreover, there will be
Seminars concern additive manufacturing applications and reverse engineering;
Visits to the companies that use CAD/CAM integration.
The aim of the tasks is analyze a specific topic of course in small team under the leadership of the teacher. Finally, write a brief essay and discuss it in exam.

Assessment and grading criteria
The final exam is in the oral form and is shared in two sections: the first one includes the topics of the lectures and the second focuses on the discussion of the essay, corrected by the lecturer. At every stage of the exam, according to the answers provided by the student, a grade is assigned. The final mark (up to 30/30) will be the average of the two grades abovementioned, if each of them is sufficient.
