Subject fundamentals
The aim of the course consists in giving the fundamental concepts about identification, assessment and mitigation of hydro-geological risks, both from the hydraulic and the hydrologic point of view.
Expected learning outcomes
The student is expected to understand and apply the tools and methods used in the flood risk assessment and management. Computer practice is foreseen.

Hydraulics, Hydrology, Probability and Statistics
1.Introduction: risk perception
Preliminary knowledge: Extreme flood events and hydro-geological disasters in Italy.
Phases of flood risk assessment and management
Organization of the protection from hydro-geological dissasters in Italy. Role and effects of the most important laws and regulations.
Flood mitigation measures: structural and non-structural, distributed and localized, active and passive.

2. Hazard identification
Systematic projects: Maps of areas affected by natural disasters (AVI).
Reconstruction and frequency estimation of extreme hydrological events of the past (big rainstorms)
3. Prediction Flood Hazard Maps
Hydrologic hazard: Regionale statistical analysis of extreme events.
Case studies in Piedmont and Italy.
Hydraulic Hazard: identification of flood prone areas.
Flood volume estimation (flood peak intensity-duration curves).
Hydrologic and hydraulic methods for flood routing.
Flood attenuation measures and structures.
Flood Risk Maps and PAI projects in Italy.

4. Prevention (Non-structural measures)
Flood forecasting and early warning systems.
Civil protection against flooding
Organization of the Flood warning systems
Rainfall threshold for early warning.
Flood simulation models for design and forecasting.
Methods, measures and regulations in flood risk management. ARPA Piemonte case study
5. Prevention (Structural measures)
Passive defense structures (levees and diversions)
Active defense structures (flood attenuation systems)
6. Hydrological safety of dams
Types of dams and main functional elements.
Italian legislation about dams.
Dams operating conditions and management plans.
Dam effects downstream.
Delivery modes
Applications consist in solving exercises and practical problems by applying the concepts expounded in the lessons. Exercises, done in groups of 3-4 units, will be organized in a report and explained during the exam.

Examination is oral, dealing with the topic of lectures and with the content of the report related to the laboratpry applications
