Objectives of the course
The unit goes through the landmarks of the settlement dynamics, seeking to highlight growing powers, conflicts and methods to read current layout’s stratifications. The learning pathway contemplates three main objectives:
- Knowledge of the European and North-American city, grounded on critical comparison of well-established interpretative approaches, on the basis of texts where general framework and key notions are drawn.
- Knowledge of models, projects and underlying iconography supporting historiography interpretations, with the goal of shaping a shared catalogue of protagonists, images and exemplary cases.
- Shaping of critical judgement through comparison of emblematic cases representatives of the discipline’s complexity.
Expected skills
During the unit it will be required to develop the capability to read urban settlements, historical stratifications, patterns of urban growth and urbanisation processes. It is noted that lesson attendance is mandatory, and that this will be checked by signing an attendance sheet at the start of each lesson.
Prerequisites
Prerequisite to attend the unit ‘History of town planning’, is for the student to have general knowledge of History of Architecture, with particular reference to Contemporary History, alongside basic notions of town planning, political and economic history. Specifically, the student is expected to be familiar with words, tools and essential methods needed to exhaustively interpret a city.
