Objectives of the course
Optical fiber communication systems are the basic infrastructure of today telecommunication networks because they offer a wide bandwidth, bigger than any other technology (hundreds of Gbit/s), and they can cover large distances without the need for signal regeneration (thousands of kilometres).
Goal of this course is to analyze performances of optical receivers and study the behaviour of systems supported by optical amplification.
Syllabus
Introduction to optical systems: an historical perspective

Non optically amplified systems: quantum limit, performance evaluation for a practical receiver and optimization of pulse and receiver

Optically amplified systems: optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), quantum limit and performance in practical cases

System based on EDFA periodic optical amplification (chain of amplifiers): performance evaluation in linear and saturated regime
Laboratories and/or exercises
During this course student will attend PC based experiences using the OptSim software that allow to perform virtual experiments on optical communication systems. During classes will also be presented exercises showing solution of design problems and system analysis.
