Objectives of the course
Optical fiber communication systems are the basic infrastructure of today telecommunication networks because they offer a wide bandwidth, bigger than any other technology (hundreds of Gbit/s), and they can cover large distances without the need for signal regeneration (thousands of kilometres).
Goal of this course is to analyze principal optical transmission techniques and study the impact on the signal of propagation phenomena, in order to evaluate system performances for defining design rules and techniques
Syllabus
Modulation formats for optical communication systems: IMDD-NRZ, IMDD-RZ, Duobinary, CSRZ and DPSK;
Chromatic dispersion: characterization, pulse distortion and compensating techniques;
Non-linear Kerr effects: Self-Phase Modulation (SPM), Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM) and Four-wave mixing (FWM)
Study of their impact on system performances and possible countermeasures
Dispersion maps: a design technique for systems based on periodical amplification
Raman effect: physical aspects
Crosstalk
The distributed Raman amplifier: characterization, optimization
The hybrid amplifier: Raman-EDFA
Laboratories and/or exercises
During this course student will attend PC based experiences using the OptSim software that allow to perform virtual experiments on optical communication systems.
Revisions / Exam
Written examination and laboratory report evaluation, oral examination optional.
