Subject fundamentals
The course is aimed to provide to students the fundamental knowledge for the enviromental sustainable management of production activities. The main international and national laws will be shown and the related management and technical strategies in order to comply with environmental sustainability aims according to the kind of product and production cycle. In order to have an environmentally sustainable technological cycle it is possible to follow a double approach: reduction at the source of the environmental impact by modifying the production cycle (technologies, raw materials, and so on) or reduction at the end with the following treatment of solid, liquid and gaseous emissions. The environmental sustainability may be a further occasion of development for a firm.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of laws concerning the prevention and the reduction of the pollution of a production activity. Knowledge of production processes according to the kind of product. Knowledge of technologies and of management strategies useful to minimize the environmental impact of a firm. Economic evaluation of different solutions. The aim is to provide to students the necessary abilities to be able to face the environmental Responsability in a production activity. This ability may be useful both for an industrial engineer and both for a civil environmental engineer.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Chemistry, physics and mathematics.
Contents
1.Pollutants and chemical, physical and biological parameters useful to define the characteristics of outflows of a production activity. (3 h)

2. Environmental laws about pollution prevention, atmosphere emissions, wastewaters discharge in rivers and waste treatment of a production activity (3 h).

3. Production cycle of a firm: examples according to different kinds of products, foundries, paper industries, textiles industries, food industries, mechanical industries. Different kinds of solid, liquid and gaseous emissions (22.5 h).

4. Strategies for the minimization at the source of the outflows of a production activity: solid, liquid and gaseous (6 h)

5. Technologies for the treatment of gaseous emissions: cyclone, filters, scrubber, active carbon sorption (4.5 h).

6. Technologies for the treatment of wastewaters: oil and grit removal, settling, biological treatmnets, physical and chemical precipitation, filtration, ionic exchange, membranes, lagoons, phytodepuration, sludge disposal. (9 h)

7. Technologies for solid waste treatment: selective crushing, sieving, magnetic separation, electrostatic separation, balistc separation, fluid medium separation, biological treatments. (9 h)

8. Environmental certification procedures (ISO 14000). (3 h).
Delivery modes
Guided visits are foreseen to industrial activities in order to understand the production cycle with the related management strategies concerning wastes, wastewaters and gaseous emissions. Some applied exercises will be developed with related projects in order to implement new management and technical solutions useful to enhance the environmental sustainability of the firm with a sustainable economical cost.

Some slides will be put on the web.
Assessment and grading criteria
The exam is both written and oral. The developed project will be valued too in the final mark.
