Subject fundamentals
The course is aimed to provide to students the fundamental knowledge for the environmental sustainable management of production activities. The main international and national laws will be shown and the related management and technical strategies in order to comply with environmental sustainability aims according to the kind of product and production cycle. In order to have an environmentally sustainable technological cycle it is possible to follow a double approach: reduction at the source of the environmental impact by modifying the production cycle (technologies, raw materials, and so on) or reduction at the end with the following treatment of solid, liquid and gaseous emissions. The environmental sustainability may be a further occasion of development for a firm.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of laws concerning the prevention and the reduction of the pollution of a production activity. Knowledge of production processes according to the kind of product. Knowledge of technologies and of management strategies useful to minimize the environmental impact of a firm. Economic evaluation of different solutions. The aim is to provide to students the necessary abilities to be able to face the environmental Responsibility in a production activity. This ability may be useful both for an industrial engineer and both for a civil environmental engineer.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Chemistry, physics and mathematics.
Contents
Introduction to general concepts of environmental sustainability of productive processes and perspectives for polluted flows management.
Pollutants and chemical, physical, biological parameters for polluted flows characterization;
Overview of wastewater, waste and emissions treatment technologies;
Regulations and duties of firms about wastewater, waste and emissions management. Guided projects.
Industrial waters: qualitative and quantitative features, critical aspects and treatment technologies. Case studies analysis (production of rubber, pulp and paper, fruit);
Discussion of case studies of productive cycles (mineral extraction, foundry processes, textiles, pharmaceuticals, personal care products), and of the treatment of wastes (end of life vehicles, WEEE, biological treatment, thermal treatment, final disposal).
Delivery modes
External experts will give seminars in support to the analysis of case studies. Some applied exercises will be developed in order to implement new management and technical solutions useful to enhance the environmental sustainability of the firm with a sustainable economical cost.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
The slides will be available for the students.
Assessment and grading criteria
The exam is written (2 hours), oral is optional.
