Subject fundamentals
The course provides a general picture of the technologies, services, transmission and data processing techniques in telemedicine applications.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to
- evaluate pros and cons, limits and applicability of the various transmission and information processing techniques described in the lectures
- design the basic structure of a telemedicine application.
Moreover the student will gain:
- knowledge of the structure of a telecommunication system
- basic knowledge of the modulation techniques
- basic knowledge of the characteristics of wired and wireless networks
- knowledge of the trade-off between bit rate, bandwidth, power
- basic knowledge of some communication standards
- knowledge of the specific problems of telemedicine applications
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic knowledge of signal theory.
Contents
- Generalities on telemedicine, e-health, m-health
- Techniques for information transmission: transmission media, analogue and digital modulations, transmission bit rate and bandwidth, source and channel coding, multiplexing techniques
- Security and cryptography
- Telecommunication networks: topologies, ISO-OSI model, IP protocol
- Wireless networks: from GSM to LTE, Body Area Networks, Sensor Networks, Internet of Things
- Description of some telemedicine applications and discussion
- Design of a telemedicine application (groups with 4-5 students each)
Delivery modes
Lectures (about 40 hours) and practice classes (about 20 hours) will alternate. The practice classes will be devoted to the design of the telemedicine application.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
The professor will provide the slides used in the lectures and practice classes. The scheme of the report on the designed telemedicine application will also be provided.
Assessment and grading criteria
The student is evaluated on the basis of
- a written exam (two hours) made of 6 open questions,
- the report on the designed telemedicine application (one report per group of 4-5 students)
The grade of the written exam depends on the correctness and completeness of the answers, the maximum garde is 18/30. The grade of the report depends on the clarity of the description, the maximum grade is 15/30. The two grades are added together to obtain the final grade; if it is larger than 31, it will be convereted into 30 lode.
