Subject fundamentals
The course is taught in English.

The goal of this course is providing a description of the main features of telecommunication systems with special attention to wireless communication systems. During the course, we will first review the most relevant digital transmission techniques. Then the main features of multipath fading channels will be highlighted and the major communication techniques aimed at reducing the impact of fading will be described.
Expected learning outcomes
- Knowledge of basic information theory (entropy, mutual information, channel capacity)
- Knowledge of basic coding theory
- Ability to analyze the system performance on the additive white Gaussian noise channel
- Knowledge of multipath fading channels
- Knowledge of Rayleigh and Rician fading channels
- Knowledge of the time/frequency dynamic features of fading channels
- Ability of analyzing receive diversity-based communication systems
- Ability of analyzing OFDM systems
- Knowledge and Ability of analyzing multiple-access techniques such as TDMA, FDMA, and CDMA
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic knowledge on probability theory, signal theory and digital transmission. In particular, basic knowledge on the transmission over the additive white Gaussian noise channel and error probability of the fundamental transmission techniques such as PAM, PSK and QAM.

- Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems (8 hours)
