Objectives of the course
The goal of this course is to provide basic notions about architectures, algorithms, design methodologies, and evaluation of modern microprocessor based digital systems. During the course we will analyze the most important families of microprocessors and their internal structures (bus, caches, pipelines, ') as well as the basic features of some microcontrollers.
- Computer systems organization
- Priviledge levels and protected mode: Intel 80286 and 80386
- Memory Management Unit: pagination
- Memory management: internal and external cache
- Cache management policies
- I/O management
- Pipeline architecture and design
- RISC vs CISC microprocessors
- Pentium microprocessor and beyond: superscalar microprocessors, branch prediction, '
- Parallel systems
- Microcontrollers and DSP
- Advanced assembly programming for Intel architectures
