Subject fundamentals
The teaching is aimed to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of hydraulics.
The teaching of Technical Hydraulics adds an important element to the formation of the building engineer who in his professional activity will deal with various problems of hydraulic nature. In fact, there are numerous intersections between building and water: consider, for example the water distribution or sewage systems, the presence of water in the foundation soils , the reuse of meteoric water and wastewater in urban areas . Learning the laws of statics and of the motion of the water, and through the knowledge of the general aspects of the hydraulic infrastructure, the student will acquire the technical knowledge necessary to solve many problems of hydraulics and will be able to speak competently with the specialists in the hydraulic area. The teaching consists of lectures and exercises that will be conducted in the classroom. Tours are available in the laboratory of Hydraulics at the Politecnico di Torino.
Expected learning outcomes
The teaching of hydraulic engineering provides the basic knowledge necessary to be able to approach an hydraulic problem and the tools for a variety of practical applications, such as the calculation of the water force on surfaces (eg, of tanks, walls, swimming pools ..) , the design and verification of pressure pipes, for example for the distribution of water inside the buildings, the detection of the water levels in the channels. The knowledge given in the teaching is also useful to the engineer to interact with specialists in the hydraulic field or to investigate the matter independently.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
It requires the ability to apply the tools of mathematics (calculus of derivatives and integrals) acquired in previous courses and knowledge of mechanics.
Contents
The topics covered in class (lesson and exercise) concern ( total 80 hours)
Fluid statics: stress analysis, pressure measurement, forces on surfaces. (10 hours)
Kinematics of fluids. (6 hours)
Fundamental equations of fluid dynamics. Bernoulli's theorem. Equations of motion of real fluids. (15 hours)
Current pressure: the design and testing of pressure pipes in steady state. (15 hours)
Water supply and distribution in buildings, regulations. (5 hours)
Aqueducts: general characteristics, hydraulic to aqueducts: long pipelines, practical problems. (12 hours)
Systems of waste water by gravity inside the buildings. (3 hours)
Sewage: general features: free-surface flows in steady state. (12hours)
Reuse of meteoric and treated water in urban environment. (2 hours)
Delivery modes
All topics will be the subject of exercises conducted by the teacher in the classroom. During the hours of training will also be carried out exercises delivered to the students before so that, from a comparison of the elaboration made by themselves and in the classroom, they can assess their degree of learning. Will be carried out a small thesis concerning a topic of those treated in the classroom (eg., design of the water distribution within a building or designing a system for the collection and disposal of meteoric water).

Assessment and grading criteria
The exam consists of a written test (some multiple choice quizzes and exercise) and an oral part. You can access the oral vote if the script is sufficient. The quizzes are intended to assess the learning of the basics of Hydraulics and ability to find solutions to simple problems, thanks to the proposed track of multiple responses; the exercise instead assesses the ability to solve a problem without a trace. The oral part focuses on the theory, to verify that the setting is well done, and the exposure of small thesis is required. The understanding of the subject can sometimes be verified even asking you to read and comment some sentences of Hydraulics.
